Microgreens Instructions:

Harvesting: Use clean scissors to cut the microgreens at mid-stem, just below the leaves.
During Harvest: Keep the microgreens in the green tray. Place a saucer with water underneath to maintain freshness while harvesting.
After Harvest: Once all microgreens are harvested, rinse the green tray thoroughly. Dispose of any leftover roots or medium, then reuse the tray to sow new seeds.

Eggs, homegrown peppers, and microgreens. The Microgreens consist of sauteed - basil, cilantro and black oil sunflower microgreens in sesame oil. The sunflower microgreen component adds a nutty taste. The cilantro adds a fresh citrus like flavor which matches well with the taste of the basil.

One of my little mosquito helpers hanging out in the water barrel. Frogs are all around amazing little creatures. I’m excited because when this lid comes up there are no mosquitoes or larvae in the water… so I can fill up on water for container plants and keep it moving.

Frogs are a great sign of a working, natural ecosystem. 🐸💚

Microgreens contain significantly higher levels of vitamins and antioxidants! Grow indoors with minimal space and equipment. Most will grow in 7 to 10 days with baby greens coming in 20-30 days.

Tasty recipe:
Dash of fresh lemon juice, sesame oil, olive oil, and your favorite seasoning ( for me it’s garlic salt). Mix it in for a nice healthy boost to your day!

Tomatoes! This weather is the sweet spot for tomatoes.. not too hot and not too cold. Tomatoes.. most varieties stop producing when temps reach those summertime highs of 90+ so keep that in mind as you are growing tomatoes in Houston and surrounding areas.

Cabbage… it’s a bit neglected but still thriving.. Will give it some organic compost, worm casting, and organic fertilizer. 💚👩🏽‍🌾🌱

Just a few more cold weather crops and the start of a few Spring crops to get us going indoors.

First- I start off with a good moist seed mix.. I add a little sand and perlite to allow for airflow. Next, I add a few seeds to each container depending on the veggie I may sow a few more seeds (e.g. mustard greens). Next I put all my little containers in a 10x20 tray and cover with a humidity dome.. no need for light in the beginning. The 10X20 tray will sit on a germination heating pad to stimulate germination. I add just a little bit of water from time to time at the bottom of the tray to promote a good environment under the dome, humidity along with air circulation. The dome sits lightly on top it’s not clamped down or tight.

Second- once I see germination I take those seedlings from under the humidity dome and I put them under direct light and water from the bottom.

Third- once the true leaves come in I’ll transfer the seedlings to a bigger container with their last destination being either in a pot or in-ground.

Celery! In a good ole pot of chicken noodle soup or vegetable soup! Celery just like most varieties of veggies comes in different varieties. The big variety common in grocery stores is called Utah Celery. Celery is packed with nutrients and surprising enough.. it’s a perennial! It can endure the Houston summers but thrives in cooler temps.

So grow celery! It can indeed grow in containers!

Roselle Hibiscus! Let’s harvest some seeds. Once you grow roselle you shouldn’t have to buy seeds again. Each pod contains so many. All parts of the plant are edible.. what an added bonus! 🌱

COMPOST TIME. 🌱 You can buy organic compost or MAKE YOUR OWN from decaying leaves, grass clippings, remnants of plant matter from your summer/spring garden, veggie and fruit food scraps, egg shells, the list goes on. You need a balance of green matter and brown matter.. get a rake and mix the organic matter weekly for faster results.

Compost is a great organic soil amendment helping to creat healthier soil for your veggies and fruit.

Feed the soil and it will feed you. 💚
